The first ship equipped with ammonia fuel is under development
For the first time, Norway is developing a container ship with ammonia fuel called Yara Idea, which can use ammonia fuel for its energy supply.
According to Tekna's technology and technology news service, for the first time, it will build a container ship with ammonia fuel capability, in which a 250 kWh battery pack is also used. This ship is supposed to be ready for operation by 2026. The construction of this ship is also used to travel between Oslo, Berwick, Hamburg and Bremerhaven. The company that built this ship says that the world is currently under a climate crisis and everyone should gather their strength to reduce greenhouse gas emissions as soon as possible.
The ship in question is being built by a Norwegian company called Yara Clean Energy, which operates in the field of ammonia production. North Sea Container Line will also cooperate in its construction.
Currently, about 2.8% of carbon dioxide emissions in the world are caused by maritime transport. This amount was about 706 million tons last year. While the use of pure ammonia as a fuel can be effective in reducing greenhouse gas emissions. Also, special ships for transporting goods can use this fuel for their activities without any pollution in the world. Yara company, which operates in the field of ammonia production, plans to supply the ammonia needed for the fuel of this ship. This fuel will be produced in a non-fossil and almost carbon-free way.
