The possibility of public observation of a sample of Bennu asteroid stone was provided.
A sample of the asteroid Bennu was brought back to Earth by the Osiris Rex mission and is now on display at the Smithsonian Institution.
According to Tekna technology and technology news service, the Osiris Rex probe will transfer parts of the Bennu asteroid to Earth during a trip of about 2 years. A small rock from this asteroid has been put on public display and can be seen up close. The desired stone for download is the pieces stuck together and rich in minerals. According to C scientists, these pebbles can be effective in better understanding of the solar system.
Now, the National Museum of Natural History at the Smithsonian Institution in Washington has unveiled this pebble in a ceremony hosted by the US Space Agency.
In this ceremony, about 50 people, including the public and members of the press, gathered in the meteorites section of the Geology Hall of this museum to see a sample of this asteroid for the first time. The desired stone is also inside a stainless steel bottle, which is placed inside a glass port for viewing. Also, the environment around this stone is filled with pure nitrogen so that this stone remains pristine.
The stone displayed from Bennu asteroid is about 8 mm with a weight of 143 mg. According to the CT scan performed on the stone, it has been determined that there are dozens of smaller stones inside it, which have created it by sticking together next to each other. Now, by using this sample, it is possible to study minerals and molecules rich in water and carbon related to the era before the life of the planet
